Sustainable Livelihood Promotion
Objective:
To promote sustainable and creative livelihood strategies within land reform projects that Nkuzi works with. The project has three main components to it: the development of an approach to livelihood improvement with Nkuzi and client communities; the facilitation of support to pilot livelihood improvement projects within three communities; and the promotion and building of skills in appropriate agricultural practices.
Main Activities:
  • Identify target communities for pilot projects and conduct a needs and resource assessment including the gathering of information on current livelihoods strategies in the targeted communities
  • Facilitate the planning and implementation of projects by the three targeted communities
  • Organise training for community members in response to the needs assessment. Develop relevant course material and translate into local languages where necessary
  • Look for model livelihood projects that can be supported and learnt from
  • Arrange at least four exchange visits for skills sharing between communities
  • Bring in resource people to advise and train communities
  • Promote appropriate agricultural methods within communities worked with
  • Gather relevant materials on livelihoods projects and build relationships with other organisations in this field of work
  • Develop an approach through work with pilot communities and write up this approach as a guide to Nkuzi=s work and for sharing with others
  • Build staff capacity through internal and external training and the bringing in of resource people
  • Resources:
  • There are currently two field staff working on this programme in the Limpopo Province.
